Early Life

Diego Luna was born on December 29, 1979, in Toluca, Mexico. He was raised in Mexico City. His mother, Fiona Alexander, was a British costume designer of Scottish and English descent. She died in a car accident when Luna was only two years old. His father, Alejandro Luna, was a theatre, film, and opera set designer. He grew up with his older sister as well as his childhood friend, Gael Garcia Bernal, who he knew since infancy as their mothers were friends. Luna and Bernal would go on to frequently co-star in various productions together. Luna began appearing in plays at the age of seven. As a child actor, he also appeared in a number of telenovelas and films.

Career

During his early career, Luna appeared in primarily Spanish productions. Some of these include “El abuelo y yo” and “Angeles sin paraiso.” When he was a teenager, he had a main role in the casts of “El premio mayor” and “La vida en el espejo.” He also starred in the films “Un hilito de sangre,” “El cometa,” and “Un dulce olor a muerte.” These films rocketed him to stardom as a teenager in Mexico. In 2000, he appeared in “Before Night Falls,” his first international film. In 2001, he appeared in “Y tu mama tambien,” a Mexican road trip film that was both a critical and box office success that helped Luna achieve international stardom.
