Early Life

Julia Garner was born on February 1, 1994, in New York City. She was born in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx to parents Tami Gingold and Thomas Garner. Her mother worked as a therapist after having a successful career as an actress and comedian in her native country of Israel. Her father is a painter and art teacher. Julia’s mother is Jewish, and she was raised in a Jewish household with her older sister, Anna, who is an artist. Because her mother speaks Hebrew and often spoke it at home, Garner understands Hebrew but is not fluent in speaking it. Julia attended Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, Connecticut. She struggled with intense shyness when she was younger. When she was 15 years old, she began taking acting lessons in order to overcome her shyness.  She then developed the dream of becoming an actress and began going to auditions for television series and films.

Career

Garner made her film debut at the age of 17 in Sean Durkin’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” She played the role of Sarah in the film. In 2012, she appeared in the film “Not Fade Away” by director David Chase, who had written a small role in the film specifically for her. The same year, Julia also landed her first starring role in the 2012 film “Electrick Children.” In 2013, she starred in the horror film “The Last Exorcism Part II” alongside Ashley Bell. She also played the lead in the American remake of the Mexican horror film “We Are What We Are.” In 2014, Garner appeared in “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” as Marcie. She appeared in the film with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and it was the first time she acted against a green screen. The next year, she starred in the Paul Weitz-directed comedy film “Grandma” alongside Lily Tomlin. Julia played the character of a teenage student who elicits the help of her grandmother, played by Tomlin, in obtaining an abortion. The following year, she appeared in an episode of the HBO comedy series “Girls” and in the film “Good Kids.” From 2015 to 2018, Garner played Kimberly Breland in the series “The Americans.” She appeared in a total of ten episodes of the series from seasons three to six. She was also supposed to make her off-Broadway debut in the Noah Haidle play “Smokefell” but was unable to due to scheduling conflicts. In 2017, she appeared in three films – “Tomato Red,” “One Percent More Humid,” and “Everything Beautiful is Far Away.” In 2017, Garner landed what would become her most prominent television role to date when she was cast in the Netflix crime drama series “Ozark” opposite Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. She starred as Ruth Langmore and quickly became a fan favorite. For her work on the show, she earned critical acclaim and won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She remained on the show until it ended in 2022. In 2022, Garner was cast as Anna Delvey in the Netflix series “Inventing Anna.” The series was created and produced by Shonda Rhimes and was based on the “New York” article by Jessica Pressler that detailed how the real-life fraudster Anna Delvey had tricked and manipulated many wealthy and prominent people in New York City. She received critical acclaim for her work in the show and was nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2023, Garner appeared in the film “The Royal Hotel,” which tells the story of two American women who backpack across South Australia.

Personal Life

Garner married singer Mark Foster, the lead vocalist of Foster the People, in December 2019. They married at New York City Hall after having been engaged for eight months.
